Fate, Faith, and October 7th: The Neighbor I Never Knew
Guest: Debbie Berger
Description:
Life has a way of leading us to the people we need most, often in the most unexpected ways. That’s exactly what happened when I took a five-mile walk through my neighborhood and finally decided to approach a house I had passed countless times. The pro-Israel signs in the yard had always caught my eye, and on a whim, I knocked on the door. That’s how I met Debbie Berger, a fellow Jewish woman whose pride, strength, and unwavering support for Israel turned a simple introduction into a powerful friendship.
Debbie, a wife, mother, and radiologist, has always carried a deep commitment to her Jewish identity. Since October 7th, she has traveled to Israel twice with Ramah Israel, an organization dedicated to fostering a meaningful and personal connection to Israel through immersive educational experiences. Ramah Israel programs encourage participants to develop a deeper understanding of their Jewishness and an individually meaningful relationship with Israel and the Jewish people. During her visits, Debbie engaged in hands-on efforts—cooking for IDF soldiers, meeting with grieving families, working in the fields, and witnessing both the resilience and heartbreak of a nation under attack.
As distant neighbors turned close friends, we have found comfort and strength in each other during these difficult times. Whether over coffee or through shared moments of grief and resolve, we continue to support one another as we stand against rising antisemitism and the ongoing threats to Israel and the Jewish people. This episode is about fate, faith, and the unexpected ways we find connection and purpose in a world that often feels uncertain.
