Timeless Reflections:  Mark Twain and the Jews

In this episode, I share Mark Twain’s short essay Concerning the Jews, published in 1898 in Harper’s Magazine. The essay blends humor with serious critique, offering both admiration and satire towards the Jewish community. Though Mark Twain fell right in line with the Jew Hatred (Antisemitism) of the day, he does offer a profound and admiring perspective on the Jewish people in this essay!  Twain highlights the Jewish peoples enduring resilience, unwavering family values, and significant contributions to society. And though the essay sparked a lot of controversy at the time, and continues to do so to this day, I have chosen to take a  positive view of the essay as an inspiring work of literary art  which is certainly still relevant today.
