Shortcast 3: Judea & Samaria

An image of a land of plenty separated from a rundown settlement of crude cement structure by telephone poles and barbed wire.

WORDS MATTER: IS IT THE WEST BANK OR JUDEA & SAMARIA?

What’s in a name? In this episode, I share my thoughts on the language we use to describe one of the most contested regions in the world. I explore the Biblical and historical significance of the terms “Judea and Samaria” and contrast that with the modern geopolitical use of “West Bank.”

These terms are far from neutral. I highlight how language can reflect deeper truths—or distort them—and why a growing number of lawmakers, including Representative Claudia Tenney and Senator Tom Cotton, are pushing for change through legislation like H.R.7552. Their proposed bill would require U.S. documents to use the historically grounded names “Judea and Samaria” instead of “West Bank.”

This episode is a call to consider how powerful words truly are—especially when they shape global narratives and policy.
